Tourism operators worried for their future

VICTORIA (March 7, 2018) – The livelihood of tourism operators and workers in the Kootenays is being threatened by the NDP’s new Employer’s Health Tax.

Steve Paccagnan, President of the world-class Panorama Mountain Village ski resort, was surprised to learn he would be hit with a $160,000 tax bill. He now faces a tough decision: should he raise prices for visitors, or lay off members of his staff?

Today in Question Period, Columbia River-Revelstoke MLA Doug Clovechok asked Tourism Minister Lisa Beare if she would come to the riding to explain her unfair tax scheme to Steve and other tourism operators, but she refused to acknowledge his request.

Finance Minister Carole James responded instead— dismissing the ski resort’s concerns and suggesting its operators don’t understand how taxation works.
